Weather Alert – Tropical Cyclone Harold Approaching Vanuatu

Location:  Solomon Islands and Vanuatu

Event:  Tropical Cyclone Harold Approaching Vanuatu

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) and the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center advise that Tropical Cyclone Harold—currently over Solomon Islands—is approaching Vanuatu.  Modeling suggests Harold will likely intensify to a Category 3 cyclone as it passes over the Vanuatu Group.

A severe weather warning is in effect for the all of Vanuatu.  Rainfall will be heavy with the possibility of flash flooding—especially in low-lying areas, near rivers, and along the coast.  Damaging winds of up to 155 kilometers per hour are expected within a broad area around the storm’s center.

Actions to Take:

  • Find safe and secure accommodation
  • Monitor local media and VMGD for up-to-date warnings and forecasting data. Be aware that the storm path and intensity may change
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities.
  • Avoid flooded areas. Be aware of the possibility of flash flooding.
