Event: Potential for Development of a Tropical Cyclone in/around Vanuatu Group

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department and the U.S. Joint Typhoon Warning Center advise that the likelihood for the development of a significant tropical cyclone in/around the Vanuatu Group between December 13 and December 17 is high.

While the path and intensity of the potential storm is uncertain at this time, U.S. citizens in Vanuatu are advised of the possibility of heavy rain, damaging winds, flash flooding, and rough seas.  U.S. citizens should closely monitor local weather forecasts over the coming weekend and take steps to prepare themselves and their families for a potential tropical cyclone.

Actions to Take:

  • Find safe and secure accommodation
  • Monitor local media and VMGD for up-to-date warnings and forecasting data
  • Be aware that a storm’s path and intensity may change unpredictably
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Be aware of the possibility of flash flooding and damaging winds
  • Avoid travel in and through affected areas
  • Advise family and friends of your whereabouts
