United States Empowers Government of Papua New Guinea to Build Resilience

Participants from Government, NGOs and the private sector who gathered at the Climate Ready National Consultation to prioritize areas of support that and align their climate adaptation plans and goals.

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – The United States Government, and the Government of Papua New Guinea, held a national consultation meeting on March 16, 2017 that brought together government representatives, non-government organizations, and the private sector to introduce the United States Agency for International Development’s (USAID) new Climate Ready project.

The regional project will operate in: The Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. The project headquarters is located in Suva, Fiji with sub-regional offices in Port Moresby and Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia. Climate Ready will work with government partners and other stakeholders to achieve policy goals, access financing from international sources, and improve the skills and systems within each country to better manage and monitor development projects.

The consultation meeting brought together key individuals who are poised to strengthen resilience of the people of Papua New Guinea. During the meeting, stakeholders prioritized future actions that the project could undertake including: increasing planning and preparedness for future threats, encouraging coordination among government entities to prepare and submit joint project proposals for funding, and strengthen private sector and NGOs systems to implement future development projects.

United States Ambassador Catherine Ebert-Gray reaffirmed the American people’s commitment to the well-being of the peoples of the Papua New Guinea. “We seek to help all Pacific island countries become more resilient, protect the lives and livelihoods of their people, and increase their prosperity” said Ebert-Gray.
