Tsunami Threat Issued for Solomon Islands and Vanuatu (March 5, 2021)

Location: Vanuatu and Solomon Islands

Event: U.S. citizens in Vanuatu and Solomon Islands are advised that the U.S. Tsunami Warning System has issued a Tsunami Threat for coastal areas of Vanuatu and Solomon Islands following several large earthquakes off the coast of New Zealand. Tsunami waves of up to three (3) meters in parts of Vanuatu and up to one (1) meter in parts of Solomon Islands are possible. 

U.S. citizens in areas under potential threat are advised to take precautionary measures, to monitor local media for updated local information, and to follow the directions of local authorities as applicable.

Actions to take:

  • Stay away from low lying coastal areas until the threat has passed
  • Monitor local media for updated local threat information
  • Follow the instructions of local authorities
  • Advise family and friends of your whereabouts
