The U.S. Embassy Port Moresby advises all U.S. citizens visiting or residing in Papua New Guinea that the Embassy has temporarily tightened its security measures for U.S. Embassy employees following a recent assault on an American citizen. The Embassy recommends that the American community in Papua New Guinea also continually review and adjust their own security measures.
The Embassy has established the following temporary measures until further notice:
- Embassy personnel are strongly advised to carry cell phones and radios when traveling in personally-owned vehicles (POVs) in Port Moresby.
- Embassy personnel are strongly advised not to travel alone in POVs after dark, and use of POVs are prohibited between 10pm and 5am.
- Embassy personnel are to exercise additional caution when approaching police checkpoints and to make radio/telephone contact if needed for immediate mobile patrol response.
We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens traveling to or residing in our Consular district (Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands or Vanuatu) enroll in the Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at travel.state.gov to receive the latest security updates. By enrolling, you make it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact you in case of an emergency. If you don’t have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate or consular agency. The Embassy also uses this list to notify Americans of potential holiday and other activities.
