Message to U.S. Citizens: Passport Fee to Increase on December 27, 2021
4 MINUTE READ
December 17, 2021

Effective December 27, 2021, the passport security surcharge fee will increase by $20.  For minor passport applicants who use Form DS-11, the new fee is $135 (K486).  For adults renewing their passports using Form DS-82, the new fee is $130 (K468).  For adults who must apply in person using Form DS-11, the new fee is $165 (K594).

Renewal by Mail/Courier

You may qualify to renew your passport by mail/courier if you meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Your previous U.S. passport book/card is in your possession.
  • You were at least 16 years old when your most recent U.S. passport book/card was issued.
  • Your most recent U.S. passport book/card was issued less than 15 years ago.
  • Your previous U.S. passport was issued under your current legal name.

All applications paid online on or after December 27, or payments submitted by mail/courier with a postmark on or after December 27, must submit the increased fee. For more information and instructions on how to renew your passport by mail/courier and how to pay the passport fees online, please visit our Passport Services webpage. Most approved passports are returned to the applicant within two-to-three weeks from the date of application.

Schedule an In-Person Appointment

If you do not meet all of the above criteria for renewal by mail/courier, please schedule an appointment to come in person to apply for a passport. Passport appointments are available through our website. We generally provide routine American Citizen Services on Mondays and Wednesdays. However, we have added additional appointments for the week of December 20-23 to accommodate those who wish to apply in-person prior to the fee increase. Note that the U.S. Embassy will be closed December 24 in observance of the federal holiday in observance of Christmas.

Emergency Appointments

Please continue to check for available appointments as additional appointments may become available. If you require an emergency appointment, please email ConsularPortMoresby@state.gov, explaining the urgency of your request. You may be requested to provide supporting documents or information. Note that requesting an emergency appointment simply to apply before the December 27 fee increase will not qualify as an emergency.
