Health Alert – U.S. Embassy Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
6 MINUTE READ
March 21, 2020

Location:  Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu

Event:  The government of Papua New Guinea has confirmed a case of COVID-19 within its borders.  The governments of Solomon Islands and Vanuatu have not confirmed cases of COVID-19 within their borders.

In response to the global COVID-19 outbreak, government authorities continue to implement enhanced screening measures and travel restrictions to reduce the spread of COVID-19.  These measures continue to disrupt the normal flow of international travel into and out of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu.

U.S. citizens who live in the United States but who are temporarily in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, or Vanuatu should work with airlines or travel agent to arrange for immediate return to the United States using any and all commercial air routes available, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period.  U.S. citizens who regularly reside in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, or Vanuatu should avoid all international travel.

U.S. citizens are advised that transiting to the United States via Australia is not possible without an approved exemption from the Australian Government’s Department of Home Affairs, unless you are also Australian citizen or permanent resident.

Travelers should be prepared for additional travel restrictions to be put into effect with little or no advance notice.

Effective March 18, U.S. Embassy Port Moresby suspended routine visa services.  For American Citizens Services, including urgent requests for passports, please see our website or write to ConsularPortMoresby@state.gov.
