Applications Open for LGBTI Pacific Youth Forum (August 11, 2016)

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: The U.S. Embassy Port Moresby is pleased to announce that applications are now open for candidates from Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to attend the 2016 LGBTI Pacific Youth Forum.  The Forum is a landmark two-day event from October 13-14 in Sydney, Australia that will bring together lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender diverse, and intersex (LGBTI) youth leaders (under 32 years of age), advocates, and allies from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands to engage in workshops and training sessions with experts in the field of advancing LGBTI rights in the region.

The Forum is made possible through collaboration between Kaleidoscope Human Rights Foundation, the United States Embassy in Australia, and DLA Piper global law firm.

Participants to the forum will build capacity, knowledge and skills for engaging in LGBTI rights advocacy and become effective change-makers; share their experiences with each other, thereby facilitating “peer learning”; and interact with a range of Australian, International, and South Pacific LGBTI rights experts, politicians and government officials.

Participants to the forum will also have the chance to apply for one of three AU$5,000.00 grants to carry out LGBTI human rights projects in the South Pacific after the completion of the forum. Applications for the grants will open prior to the forum and participants will have the chance to work on their grant proposals during the forum with assistance from legal and grant writing experts.

Successful candidates are ensured round trip travel to Sydney, accommodation for 3 nights, per diem, visa costs, and travel insurance.

The selection of delegates will reflect all aspects of the LGBTI communities. Given the particular under-representation of lesbian and bisexual women and intersex people in LGBTI advocacy communities throughout the Pacific, special emphasis will be placed on ensuring that there are delegates from these groups participating in the program.

To apply, candidates must be 32 years of age or younger and should submit their applications directly to the Forum Coordinator Jaz Dawson at or visit

Applications close on the 29th of August at 11:59pm Australian Eastern Standard Time.
