A magnitude 7.6 earthquake occurred approximately 80km northwest of the city of Lae, in Morobe province. The U.S. National Weather Service’s Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, issued a tsunami threat for coastal areas within 1,000km of the epicenter. U.S. citizens located near coastal areas are advised to exercise increased caution, monitor local media for updates, and be prepared to evacuate to higher ground if necessary.
